“Doom,” 3D graphics pioneer John Carmack joins Oculus


John Carmack will join virtual reality headset company Oculus as CTO, Oculus announced this morning in a blog post.

Carmack is considered one of the founders of 3D graphics and served as lead programmer for Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake. He was the first developer to integrate Oculus’ Rift goggles into a game. Polygon reports he will retain his position at id Software, which he cofounded.

He composed a note for the Oculus community to mark the occasion:

“I have fond memories of the development work that led to a lot of great things in modern gaming – the intensity of the first person experience, LAN and internet play, game mods, and so on.
